Anxiety Attack Treatment Tricks
There are many anxiety attack treatment methods out there, and those who have General Anxiety Disorder (“GAD”) have tried
several, ranging from medications to therapy. In the throes of an anxiety attack, however, medication is not going
to work immediately, and while therapy certainly can help; your therapist or
group will not always be there with you.
You must, therefore, find a few ways to learn
how to
stop panic attacks while they are occurring. That’s what this
column is about.
Trick #1 – Aromatherapy
People have been using aromatherapy for thousands of years, although the actual term was coined in the twentieth century. There is a reason that we like to ‘stop and smell the roses,’ and that’s because doing so actually has a physiological effect on our biological systems. These days, it is easy to procure essential oils in small containers that can travel in a pocket or purse, and those who suffer from anxiety attacks should carry one of the following scents to inhale during times of stress: chamomile; lavender; nutmeg; orange blossom; patchouli; rose; sandalwood; or vanilla. Be careful, though, to only purchase true essential oils, not the “sugared” scents that are so widely used in today’s popular bath products.
Trick #2 – Quick Meditation
Meditation is another age-old trick that dates back approximately five-thousand years, and is a proven method for reducing anxiety. When you feel stress building, take ten minutes or so to close your eyes, or focus on something pleasant to look at (many folks have hung a favorite photograph of a nature scene or something similar in their office or cubicle to help with this).Push all thoughts out of your mind while concentrating only on your breathing. Breathe in slowly, trying consciously to fill up your rib cage and belly, instead of your chest. It may be difficult at first to get started, particularly pushing thoughts out of your mind, but the more you practice, the easier this will become.

Trick #3 – Music Therapy
You have no doubt heard the expression, “music tames the savage beast,” and that holds true of what can be described as savage anxiety as well. Sometimes all you need to do in order to ward off an anxiety attack is to put on headphones and listen to a favorite song (or a couple in a row) that you know always calms you down. Many people favor classical music for this purpose, but consider some of the “spa music” that is out there these days, or even a program such as HoloThink that touts frequencies that have been scientifically proven to immediately impart a sense of tranquility.
Trick #4 – Prayer
Whatever your religion, prayer has been a staple in stress and anxiety relief for ages. Giving your problems over to God or Buddha, or whatever deity you worship is an easy way to release yourself from the burden they bear on you, thereby immediately decreasing your level of stress, which can stop anxiety attacks before they start.
